Life is a Painting

Need I not say how long it has been since I have blogged? I guess the last time was obviously when Josi and I made our trip out East. The pictures that remain on my last blog keep me from posting another, possibly because that I know nothing is going to compare to the tranquility that we had together in those moments. Thus, attempting to create a new post that would “out do” the last was a battle already lost. So in the mean time I created a painting that inspired me from my trip to San Diego for Track Nationals.

Collegiate Track Nationals was by far my most favorite National trip. The location, people, friends, and racing made the trip worth wild. Although the out come of my races felt that the results could have been better. For the most part I knew that I gave it all and if nothing else matters I know I left everything out there. The racing was great, but at the same time I was so close to home, I never actually made it back, a mere 2 hours away to the mountains.
I don’t know if it is senioritis or the dream of life to be, all I know is that come May I will graduate from Lees-McRae.

Before the chaos of school and residents life issues, Joscelyn and I enjoyed the beauty of the mountains of NC. The time that we shared was a vacation well deserved. I cannot remember a time when the two of us had more fun together. It was the simple peanut butter, Nutella, and banana sandwich that made everything stick together.

Professional Male Model

Well, how do I put this? My name is Derrick Zoolander and I am a professional male model. I want to start a school for people who can’t surf good and want to learn how to surf gooder. Therefore with the help of my colleague and manager Matt Anticivich, he made this life size statue of me surfing. I still believe it needs to be a least 3 times as big.
Ok, all kidding aside about two years ago in the summer I was approached by a friend who asked me to model for him for this surfing statue he was creating. I thought it was cool and excited to help, but I really had no idea the reality of the situation. This past weekend the statue was unveiled and Matt’s masterpiece came to life. What can I say, Matt is a true artist just look at the detail. The statue is right next to PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy) in Encinitas (above San Diego).

So the past week or more has been fairly interesting. I have been working like crazy to get these video’s up and running for my internship.

But as for that thing called “cycling” I have officially donated blood to my mountain. Riding on the fully ridged mountain bike down a fire road… Well as Dane would say “I was just riding along...and” There was this large burnout hole from a stuck vehicle and I though I would put my front wheel in the hole going about 25 mph. (Note the sarcasm)
Turns out it was not a good idea. Rolling like a rag-doll on the compacted dirt I found myself 30+ feet away from where I went down. Confused and oxygen deprived I sat on the ground in shock of what happened. My first thought was that the crash was not fair; I had no idea I was crashing so therefore I was at a disadvantage. I know I know just let me go along with this thought.
Anyway I turned out ok, just shaken up, but in the end the crash left me a week out of riding the bike. If I get any picture I will post it.

Yeah my town is interesting.

San Diego Velodrome!

Arriving late Wednesday afternoon in northern San Diego, I went to Scripps Hospital to visit my mom who was having back surgery. Yeah not something everyone wants to go through. But after seeing her I felt relieved that she was doing a whole lot better than what I thought she would be like after a “vertebra fusion,” or something of that nature.

The next day after seeing my mom in the morning I went surfing for the first time since I been back. And what a trip, my arms are worked from just a little paddling around. The surf was small but perfect for a “gringo” like me.

Here I am on my second wave of the day.

Ok, this is obviously not me, but I needed a visual to help tell the story.

So anyway, after the surfing adventure I drove down the packed freeway to the SD velodrome. What a big difference form the LA track. I warmed up on a 48*16 then hit the 14 cog for the sprints we were doing. I also got a chance to motor pace that was helpful for group work.

Once again this is not a picture from that day, but from 1977 on the SD track.

ADT Home Depot Center is Awesome! I thought I would head out Saturday morning for the TT they have. After looping around the confusing parking lot Joscelyn and I found a spot. The first event was the flying 200 and I was slightly nervous considering that I was not warming up on the track and only the rollers. The ADT center is picky about who is on the track. A person has to have a special certification just for that track, but whatever.

Any the flying 200 was slightly disappointing. I was starting my 3 lap count and then realized I was not in position on the last lap. I tried not to panic but in doing so I started off super slow and came across the line hoping for something less than 15 second.

Surprisingly my time was 12:68 = 200m

The Kilo I was hoping to drill it and came out with a time less than desirable.

Kilo = 1:1906

As for the 4K it was more of a “let see what happens”. Rolling around the track for 16 laps did not hurt nearly as bad as the Kilo. So the last three laps I threw down like it was a kilo. The time was…

Too much News

Well, so much is happening this summer it is hard to keep up with all the information. But I will try to hit the headlines. So basically, I am working my internship at the Idyllwild Town Crier, which is awesome because I am actually doing cool stuff. Like: articles, photos, interviews, and hopefully soon video! Yeah, I know videos right how dope is that. I will post a link to the website when it all happens.
As for that thing called cycling… I have put racing on the back burner right now and trying to focus on the internship. But still ride almost every day with the exception of a few days I took off for a rest week. After the rest week “Warner Springs” Carson and I decided to do an epic ride. We ride from each other’s house and meet in the middle then ride back to my house. In the end we rode about 90 miles in the melting heat of the desert and mountains and when through at least 15 water bottles.

A late blog for an early Summer

Forgive me it’s been a while since my last blog. With so many new events happening it’s difficult to keep up. Beginning with my last week at school before I left for Nationals I had some free time to train and pack. It was nice to relax and not worry about school or projects, but at the same time it was odd not to be in a rush. Then suddenly BAM! Nationals came and went. What a weekend it was, with some awesome dirt road rides and not so amazing flats. The road race had a strange feeling that we were never really going all that hard, but inflections of cramps came during the end of the last fed zone. Unfortunately, the heat, length, and lack of proper nutrition consumption added to a 54 place a few minutes behind the main pack. I thought I was bringing up the end of the pack when I come to realize that numerous riders still came in behind me.
The Crit on the other hand was an exceptional race for me concerning my level of fitness. I felt so-so at the start, but during the middle of the race my legs felt great as I moved up through the pack to watch Fort-Lewis “attempt” to bring back the break, only to watch them give then more time. Just as thing was going well or as Dane would say, “I was just riding along” then POW! I have front flat. So I run over to the wheel pit and finally get back in only to be told I have 6 laps to go once I catch back on. Last lap the sound of grinding metal fills the air with riders falling to the left of me. Then riders block the right side of me. The only choice for me is to shoot right through the middle onto the curb. Rolling down the sidewalk, I think of what a great race I had and now I am stuck outside of the course, Nooooo. Then, Sheedy comes to the rescue by ripping down the tape and waving me through. Winding up my sprint I jump off the curb slamming my way back into the pack. Sadly enough, I roll in 49th only to feel like I could have placed higher given the circumstances. But then I tell myself “that’s racin”. So I feel for my first Road National I did well, but starting to dream of next year and the possibilities.
Well, I did have some exciting news about what has happened since I got home for the summer but I spent all my time talking about racing. Well, now isn’t that the story of my life. So maybe in the next few weeks I might give an update on the awesome news. As for now, I have a lot on my plate.

By the way here is an amazing dinner Josi and I made one night.

After all this time I get to upload my video on youtube. It was a long night in the Mac-Lab when I was waiting for a video to render or something of that nature, when I thought to myself. “Hey why don’t I convert that movie so everyone can watch it.” Well, it is now obviously 2:16am and I am back from the Lab only to stay up even later to load this video. The things I will do for the Frat, lol.

Charleston~Easter Break

Easter Break started with a sardine packed drive to Charlotte in the infamous Honda Prelude. Gracious enough Sam let gave me a ride along with Clara and Sean. Bags stuffed in the truck and in the middle of the seat my leg went numb within the first 5 minutes but I knew the trip to Chuck town had a price to pay. I sucked to up all the way to Sam’s house in Huntersville. After some confusion we loaded 4 bikes on the back on an Echo and made a 5-minute drive to a local coffee shop where my buddy Matt aka “Spitting Kodiak,” was going to pick me up. Sipping on a poorly made and over sweetened latte I read a book outside in the crisp cool air. When Matt arrived we went back to his house and headed out to Chuck town that morning but not before eating the famous “Biscuit Factory.”
Arriving mid-afternoon we settled in and soon headed out one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston, “The Majestic.” Harrison, Matt, and myself finished up our meal and met up with everyone at Harrison’s apartment. That night we made our way out to a local gathering with I forget the name of and had a good time with some friends.
The next day I head out on a bike ride after an organic breakfast at Rurdfurd’s Café. After getting a flat in the biggest bridge in Chuck town I stop at Mike’s Bike in Mtn. Pleasant. Later that night we have an awesome dinner at the Pottery Barn House on Vanderhouset St. I meet Maria Coe who was more than a gracious host for the 8 guys stopping by for a pasta dinner. It was like eating in a Pottery Barn House and having Martha Stewart cook for you. Awesome dinner!
Moving forward to Saturday night I we soon realize that night was going to be a “night of second’s,” says Tyler. The first Seafood restaurant the 5 of us go to do not work out and we go the one a few blocks down. The first concert we go to doesn’t work out and we head to the “Starting Tuesday” concert at Cumberland’s. Then the Hollywood video is closed so we go to the Blockbuster. Even though everything was at second choice it work out great and we all had a excellent time.
Sunday morning we accidentally sleep-in and rush to Church, but still arrive early somehow. Grubbing down on some pastries and coffee we wait outside under a huge white tent where hundreds of people gather in the name of God. Church was amazing and the worship music blew me away. After Church we head to a BBQ eating hamburger, hotdogs, and cookies, great race food. Matt and I soon leave driving back to freezing B.E. only to go back to the school life I am so use to. Chuck Town was good to me this year and I can only imagine what next Easter is going to bring down in Charlestown with my fiancé.

Spring Break Riding

The Saturday before I flew back to the B.E. I went on a mountain bike with my fiancé, her Dad, her brother and her brother’s friend. Joscelyn and her Dad were riding single speeds while the rest of us took the easy way out and used gears. The Orange bike that she is riding, I wish she owned but it was a loaned bike from the shop. Not a bad deal if you ask me. The Raleigh single speed her Dad is riding is another awesome bike. I had a chance to ride it and now I am hooked on single speeds. I don’t know if I want to join the “single speed nation,” but I would like to ride one most definitely.

O yeah, how could I forget Reggie the boxer. My other best friend when I am back home. He protects Joscelyn when I am gone, but I am starting to get a little jealous of Joscelyn kissing him all the time. Well maybe not, because he cannot ride a single speed, so I have that going for me.

The Final Chapter to the 12 hours of Caf

A late update to the story of the caf, but the material is still necessary to move forward in the blog. As I sat there for an enjoyable afternoon around lunchtime I watch the situation at hand revel the weakest link in the tri-pod. Clara cracked as she stated, “I just can’t do it anymore, that its I’m done. I am leaving right now.” Saxton and Jesse with jaws drawn open look at her and tried to figure out if she was serious. As she packed up her belongings the other two crossed their arms and leaned back into their chairs. “I knew it. I knew she would do this,” professed Jesse.

As the heat of the afternoon battle died down between the former tri-pod, the two dominant males took to their old habits of homework and Internet. Dinner soon approached and they could not believe that the adventure was over and all there efforts were well spent. “This wasn’t as hard as I thought I was going to be,” said Saxton. “It wasn’t a let down because I know I accomplished what I always wanted, but it seemed too easy.” The two went on to discuss what else could they possible have done. The only solution to their desires would be the ultimate 24 hrs of Caf. The spark in their eyes grew bright as they repeated to themselves, “yeah, 24 hrs of Caf.”

Early in the morning the breakfast bell rang and Saxtizzle and Balls answered by devouring Ally’s waffle. The victim left her plate of food helpless while she went to help Clara make another waffle. At that time Balls took charge and Saxtizzle soon followed. But in the end it was Balls who had the last bite.

12 HOURs of CAF

At one time there was discussion about the 12 hours of caf, 7am to 7pm all day in the caf without leaving the building. Can it been done? Will they crack? And who would be the first? Well, I am proud to say that as a new blogger myself, I have the opportunity to report the first ever “12 HOURS OF CAF”. The contestants are of the typical senior group. Two males of cycling’s greatest Jesse Hayes aka “Balls” and Chris Saxton aka “Saxtizzle”, will be fulfilling their life long dream of staying in the caf all day. Holding up the other side of the tri-pod Clara Beard will be representing the women’s section. But the question still remains, “Can it be done?” Well we will see…

Ok, so here it is this is my first blog post and I don’t expect much out of it but just an understanding of how I can vomit my thoughts into words on the screen. I might seem a little frustrated to night well that I because I left all that was good, warm, and awesomeness back home in Cali. As I recall it was 85 slight breeze coming from the southwest and I was in a hot tub soakin it up with my Fiancé as we got ready for my friend’s wedding. O how I missed that warm weather as I come back to this 15-degree cold harsh environment of Banner Blizzard Elk North Carolina. Ok so there I expressed what I wanted to say and now time to look at some pictures from Yosemite if I can load them on the page.
